Regional context
The court has already referred lawyers to their regulators over fabricated citations, the PII proposal form now asks how the practice uses AI, and the regulator answers AI with duties you already carry: what a written position covers for a UK practice, and the safest way to build one.
A maritime practice runs on documents other people rely on. Survey reports that decide a purchase, advices that decide a claim, disbursement accounts that clear a port call. The signature at the bottom is yours, and the professional indemnity policy behind it renews every year.
The courts have published their rules. The insurers have written their questions. A small practice can hold a clear, written answer to both, and it takes less time to build than one contested file.
Experience and approach
The record so far
221 obligations tracked across 25 jurisdictions
- Every founding document reviewed by the legally trained founder before delivery.
- Documents usually within two business days.

Industry context
The court showed what enforcement looks like
In June 2025 the High Court of England and Wales, sitting as a Divisional Court, found the threshold for contempt proceedings met over five fabricated case citations, referred the lawyers involved to their regulators, and warned that lawyers who fail their professional obligations on AI risk severe sanction.
The PII proposal form now asks
Trade reporting puts AI on solicitors' professional indemnity proposal forms, with underwriters asking how AI is applied across practice areas, what governance policies sit around it, and whether staff are trained, while noting no significant AI-related claims to date.
The regulator answers AI with existing duties
The Solicitors Regulation Authority, the regulator of solicitors in England and Wales, has written no AI-specific rules. Its position is that the existing framework already answers: verification of outputs, confidentiality, supervision, and clarity to clients where they interface with AI, with the compliance officer for legal practice expected to own the answer when new technology comes in.
The bench refreshed its own guidance
The Judiciary's AI guidance for judicial office holders was refreshed on 31 October 2025, expanding on hallucination and bias, adding confidentiality and data-incident reporting advice, and warning about hidden white text in documents. The bench holds itself to verification; it will expect no less from the papers in front of it.
The surveyors' institute is arguing for disclosure
The June 2026 issue of the Report Magazine of the International Institute of Marine Surveying, the UK-based surveyors' institute with about 1,000 members across more than 100 countries, argues from the principles of marine insurance that insurers should require surveyors to declare the type, scope and specific AI tools used in an assessment, and flags the risk of vessel, voyage or cargo data entering the public domain through open AI models. The disclosure clause is being argued from inside the profession.
The IIMS runs the AI conversation
The IIMS runs a continuing series in its Report Magazine on what a hybrid surveyor can and cannot let AI validate, across its membership in more than 100 countries.
Succession has few candidates in the building
The marine industry's median age is 49.5 with nearly 40 percent of the workforce over 50, and marine surveying ages with the seafarer cohort that feeds it. A one-to-three principal practice with no internal successor is the modal firm in this corner of the profession.
Fixed fees make each extra hour yours
Sophisticated clients now write AI-efficiency discounts into standard engagement terms, panel rates hold surveyors to fixed fees, and lawyers lose nearly half the non-billable day to administration. Each hour a report runs past the estimate comes out of the principal's margin.

Tools and examples
The UK wrote no AI statute; it enforces through what already binds. The Divisional Court showed in June 2025 what that looks like, the judiciary refreshed its own guidance in October 2025, and the SRA reads AI through duties a practice already carries: verification, confidentiality, supervision, clarity to clients. UK data law moved as well, with the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 amending UK GDPR from February 2026 and an ICO code on AI and automated decision-making in progress.
Used under a review rule, AI already does defined work across a maritime practice, and each task below carries a named human check. The same written position that sets those checks is the document the PII proposal form, the regulator's guidance and the court each ask about in their own words. One office policy, one verification step, one answer that holds in front of the court, the regulator and the underwriter at once.
Governed AI produces the first draft of an advice memo or a report section from the matter file, which shortens the drafting block that runs into the evenings, and the principal reviews and signs it under the review rule the policy sets before it leaves the practice.
AI condenses a matter file or a bundle of class records into a working summary, which gets the fee-earner to the issues faster, and the fee-earner checks it against the source before relying on it.
For an agency, AI drafts the narrative on a port disbursement account from the underlying entries, which clears the port call sooner, and a person reconciles it against the ledger before it reaches the principal.
The survey platform drafts report sections from field photographs and notes, which returns drafting time to the surveyor, and the surveyor confirms each finding against what they saw before the report is issued.
AI assembles a first draft of the written answers an insurer's AI question set now asks for, which turns a blank proposal form into a starting point, and the principal confirms each answer reflects actual practice before submission.
These are the workflows the prompt library and the training stand up, under the standard the documents set.
